Deb, you might also like Sarah Shaber’s LOUISE’S WAR about a young widow who leaves her family’s fish house on the NC coast to go be a secretary-clerk in 1940′s DC. Louise is of her time — no bra-burning feminist, but chafing under the domestic limitations at home. In her job at the OSS, she’s horrified to realize that her former college roommate, a French Jew, is in serious danger. She can’t act on a grand scale, but knows that small increments can make a difference.

Fascinating. I have gotten into WWI and between the wars; Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear, Joe Sandilands series by Barbara Cleverly,and a couple of others’ series whose names escape me at the moment.
I was excited to see that Mignon Ballard has a new series – thanks so much for this list – gonna print it out and see what I can find at the library or on Paperback Swap or Book Mooch…

I live in Alachua County, FL, where I grow my own veggies, raise chickens and some livestock. I am also a disabled American covered under Title II of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) b/c my MDs have prescribed I eat foods free of pesticides, growth hormones, etc.

When the Alachua County Sheriffs nose around the borders of my property, I promise them I will sue them in their individual and personal capacity for violating my rights as a disabled American under Title II of the ADA, pursuant to “TENNESSEE V . LANE” (2004 U.S. Supreme Court). Works every time.

Under Tennessee v. Lane, nutcase cops, etc., who tell you you can’t eat from your own garden can be sued PERSONALLY for violating your rights under Title II of the ADA.

Sometimes compassion and a listening ear is all you can offer – but I think for DV victims, knowing that someone cares and will provide nonjudgmental listening is a huge help!

Thank you for this comment, Laura. You are absolutely right. DV is not ‘a lover’s quarrel’ or ‘a domestic dispute.’ DV (like rape) is about power and control. It is not an argument or a spat. It is systemic manipulation of another person.

Very thought-provoking. Last night watched Women War and Peace on PBS. This episode was called I came to Testify – about rape as a tool of war. Many of the reasons they chose to speak up were because of the very thing you mention – learning and understanding that violence and sex together are about power and control. Time that we all paid attention and helped – we don’t have to help on a large scale if it isn’t possible – one person, one woman at a time…

In my younger hippie days I entered the Nevada County, CA fair every year – mostly canned goods – and took great pride in my ribbons, saved them for years until I downsized! In fact, for several years I worked at the county fair as an exhibits supervisor in the fresh fruits and vegetable building! I think it is a wonderful community builder, being involved in the county fair. Takes us back to our roots! Great post, thanks for the memories!

Hope, Each astrological sign is associated with a different body part. The theory is that the sign affects the outcome and quality of whatever chore you do during that time. So if the sign is in the feet or bowels and you canned kraut (or anything else, I suppose) it would smell like feet or bowels. The easiest way to find the sign is by using a farmer’s almanac, which you can find in bookstores or at your local feed store.

Having adopted my two girls to KEEP them from going to animal shelters I know full well the great work done by many of them. Don’t think fostering would work for me – but I am collecting toys, old blankets etc. to donate… a form of recycling for me! GREAT post…
